When I first became a nurse, I never imagined I’d be charting from a cozy corner in my house, with coffee in hand, slippers on, sunlight streaming through the blinds. But now, I work a hybrid nurse practitioner job.
For years, I associated “nursing” with hospital hallways, beeping monitors, and endless steps on my Apple Watch. I always thought that the only place I could work at as with my career is at bedside.
Now? Half of my week happens right here at home.
And honestly, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
The Hybrid Nurse Life
I currently work in a hybrid role which is a mix of clinic and remote days. I absolutely love this arrangement because on my clinic days, I still get to see my patients face-to-face, manage sleep disorders, review PAP compliance reports, and collaborate with our care team. It also is a good way to step away from home even for a few hours.
The rest of the week, on my work-from-home days, my routine looks different:
- I start my morning slow. Coffee. Journal. A quiet check-in before the world starts.
- I log into the EMR, review messages, and call patients for follow-ups.
- I do Peer to peer visits and still see my patients virtually.
- Between visits, I stretch, refill my water, maybe sneak in a quick walk outside.
There’s something grounding about being able to work in your own space while still serving patients, but without the noise and rush of the hospital or clinic setting.
🪴 My Home Office Setup

I’m a big believer that your environment shapes your energy.
Here’s what makes my setup feel calm and productive:
- A standing desk with adjustable height (because let’s be honest, nurses aren’t built to sit all day)
- A soft white lamp instead of harsh overhead lights
- A simple monitor + laptop stand to keep my posture in check
- Plants — always. A touch of green keeps me connected to life outside the chart.
- A cozy candle (I’m currently obsessed with sandalwood and vanilla)
- My planners + books. Right now I am reading Feel Good Productivity by Ali Abdaal

Nothing fancy. Just peaceful, intentional, and mine.
What I’ve Learned Working from Home as a Nurse
- Boundaries matter. Just because you’re home doesn’t mean you’re available 24/7.
- Routines are everything. Start and end your day with structure — even a five-minute “shutdown ritual” helps you mentally clock out.
- Comfort boosts productivity. A calm space makes you show up better — for yourself and your patients.
- Freedom is worth designing for. Every nurse deserves a life with more flexibility and peace.
Final Thoughts
Working hybrid has reminded me that freedom isn’t just about money — it’s about time, energy, and space. And designing a life that truly works for you and the season you are in your life.

It’s about designing a career that fits your life, not the other way around.
And that’s what I want more nurses to experience — financial freedom, career freedom, life freedom.
If that’s what you’re building toward, you’re in the right place. 💙
